You’ve found the best dog friendly apartment in Houston and are now ready to submit a rental application and prepare for moving day. We know that moving to a new apartment with a dog can be a bit of a challenge, but we're here to help make the transition as smooth as possible.

To help you and your furry friend get settled in your new home, the Reverie team offers a few tips below.

  1.  If your apartment rental application process also includes a petscreening.com link (Reverie’s does), be aware that pet fees will be based on the FIDO Score. The 1-through-5 score, or "paw rating," is based on numerous factors such as the type of dog, age, weight, behavior traits, and vaccination history.
  2. If you plan to get a new dog before or after moving in, the best types of dogs for apartment living are small to medium low maintenance dogs.
  3. To make moving day less stressful for you and your dog, Cami, our property manager, recommends waiting until you’ve moved into your new place and set up your space before bringing your furry friend home. She also recommends setting up a pet space with your dog’s bed and toys. When you bring your pet(s) home, spend as much time with them as you can to help make them comfortable in the new environment.
  4. Invest in chew toys and pet proofing sprays to help pet-proof your apartment to avoid damage.
  5. Giving your dog a piece of clothing or a towel that has your scent on it to cuddle with can help avoid some of the loneliness your pet may feel when you’re away from the apartment.
  6. To help keep your dog from barking and disturbing other residents while you’re away, play soothing music or leave the TV on at a low volume.
  7. Hearing a neighboring dog bark causes a domino effect of other dogs to start baking. If you hear a dog barking and inform management of the issue, they will contact the owner of the initiating dog to please keep their dog inside and not leave it on the balcony.
  8. Utilize your apartment community’s pet friendly amenity spaces such as dog spas, parks and runs.
  9. Get information on mobile vet services and grooming in the area before you need it.
  10. Take your dog with you to the apartment community’s office, at least occasionally. If the team loves dogs as much as we do, they will offer treats.
